Friends who live in England were showing their little ones where we live in Canada. The 5 year old asked "Why would they want to live where its so cold!". She wanted to see how cold it was "up there" this week. A fridgid 28 degrees! Ok maybe not so cold.

We are enjoying some great beach weather.

Ysabeau likes to recount the day for dada when he gets home. I love it. She goes through what she remembers of the day (even if it didn't actually happen). She is bringing in some help from Beatrix Potter and some of her Victorian english sentence starters. Let me explain:
Daddy: Did you have a good day?
Ysabeau: Sure! Presently, we went to the beach ("Presently, Peter Rabbit got caught in a trap")
Daddy: Excuse me?
Ysabeau: Suddenly, I went on my bike (Suddenly, Peter Rabbit was seen by Mr. MacGregor)

Xav's usual contented self just watching the water and the goings-on.

When we planted our garden about a month ago- its incredible how fast things pop up here - Ysabeau asked if we could grow bananas. Its unlikely in the Yukon I explained. However, she saw these beauties below and began to think her dream had come true!

I have been enjoying a chance to paddleboard. Ian too. Some friends went away and lent it to me. So much fun! It's very peaceful. One feels very close to the water without having to go in if it's too cold (unless you fall in).

And if you can't go to the beach - bring the beach to you! As well as some woollen slippers apparently in case it gets cold.

Oh how things change with kid number 2. With Ysabeau I couldn't wait to start her on solids. What would I make? How could I vary up the food for her? Where could I find the organic ingredients I needed? I barely fed her anything but homemade food. I think she was practically eating unadulterated steak by 6.5 months. Xav is 6 months shortly. We are pretty much still on rice cereal because its that easy. That's about it. Its too freakin' hot to do much else right now. He's not wasting away as many point out.

He is a big boy for almost half a year. What are his greatest gifts so far to this earth (which in his mind is really just me, daddy and sister)?
  • He smiles all the time and looks away when he shyly when he just can't stop grinning
  • He is the best baby sleeper in the world. I can count on one hand how many times he has cried for 30 seconds (and only 30 seconds) before falling asleep. Usually he just smiles, turns his head to the side and falls asleep. And yes, he sleeps 6:30 to 7:30 (13 hours)
  • He isn't a mover, which is a blessing for me right now. He rolls onto his side but not all the way over. Content with batting at things dangling above his head.
  • Cries when no one is around- loves company and just staring at the action around him
  • Naps well too
  • Just all around super easy going

We are getting ready for Yukomicon. Check it out. Thank you Auntie Rhi for his initiation into this Star Trek lovin' family.

As my friend likes to call these contraptions below - the circle of neglect. Xav is beginning to spend lots of time in here while I busy myself in the kitchen or really any time I just need a break. Its like double neglect really because he already isn't very demanding so I can literally forget he's in there till he reminds me with a cry out.

It has been a while since I posted as our new computer turned out to be a lemon. So we sucummoned to the brand and bought a Mac. I am happy. No more lemons please. The danger is now I find myself wanting to sit in front of the computer and just daze into the pretty colours of a Mac. Ridiculous but still memorizing.

Ysabeau came with me last week to Cat Chat camp. No cats. More like lots of Cat -holics. No - not Cat-aholics. Catholics. Anyway, I was in charge of the toddler room - yikes! Actually it was pretty fun. She has no real idea what was going on but looked forward to going to "Cacha" Camp (as she said) every morning, which was essentially play time for 3 hours.

It was a wilderness themed camp so it was hard to explain that she couldn't wear this Rapunzel (AKA Elsa) dress every morning as it might be a little out of sync. Somehow we managed to get out the door (usually) without it on.

I spending lots of time with Xav and Ysabeau (as per usual) but I am enjoying their company more and more. Ysabeau's logic continues to make me laugh, which balances the other times when she drives me crazy. We were building lego castles the other day and she asked me to comment on what she was building ("Check it out mom").
Me: Interesting!
Ysabeau: Interesting? I have never heard that song.
Me: What song?
Ysabeau: The interesting song.

And I thought my mind wandered.

I know this blog post has been the Ysabeau show so a Xav update next. Here is a last one with her cousin Emma. Emma makes up lots of weird and wonderful names for games they play when she comes over. They love to play a form of bumper cars on the couch using their butts. Ysabeau was trying to play by herself the other day and she said she was playing Emma's game called "Baby Butts". Yes indeed.

Summer always makes me want to get back in shape. So I have been doing some short races around town. Since my sister is going to law school soon, I participated in the Law Day run with her. Ysabeau came along and seemed a little surprised she wasn't doing the run. But she posed for some good pics. She also enjoyed some of the finisher donuts...well before anyone actually finished I am sure.

Ysa also came for "Run for Mom". We ran for Grandma....some whom have had cancer and even those who have not. Simply because all our Grandma's are amazing. However, Ysabeau broke down when she realized I was running, and she was in the stroller with Xavier. She pretty much screamed the whole 5 km except when I let her walk. A lesson learned, don't plan on a real fitness goal when you have a toddler in tow.

We have had some epically hot weather in May. The kids love playing outside. The firt pile on our front lawn was a magnet for the small ones. While I was delighted when it finally got moved, there was many a mopey kid. I was also glad wen the rain fell to give some relief. Kids and parents were happy with that outcome.

Quite often we take the bus around town. It kills time in what can honestly be a very long day with two small children. I like the slower pace and just going for the ride. We have fun playing games (hide and seek) like this at the bus stop.
Picture
I still love bedtime. While Xavier isn't much for chatting (as you see below), Ysabeau is. The other night she was trying to work out the feelings she had about an ongoing "owie" on her finger:

Me: Ysabeau, well why don't you offer your "Boo-boo" to Jesus. [That is something we try to teach in the Catholic faith - the offering up of our sufferings to Christ]
Ysabeau: Yeah. Ok. And mommie....you offer up your "boobies" to Jesus too.

Serves me right for getting too philosophical with a 2 year old.

A Day in Our Life #5

Its been a while since I posted because we have been without a properly working computer. Its amazing how I rely on it to connect with friends and even family.  I don't know if its a good or bad thing this technology dependance. Probably a bit of both.

So really this post is a Day in Our Life of May. For a an infant, it feels more like a year has passed. Xav went from spending most of his days doing this...

To doing this....

Althought he still manages to get some great sleep action in. Our friends in Marsh Lake have a wall tent with a lovely bed in it. Xav had a great 'el fresco' nap event during our day at their beach. I felt sorry for myself watching him - that I couldn't just cuddle up and do the same. Alas, Ysabeau required some attention on the beach and at the fire pit.

I am loving this chubby baby. Since breastfeeding didn't go that well with Ysabeau I am always astounded that this liquid candy can actually chub babies up this much. I mean check out these thighs. If only we could look so good on a liquid diet.

Picture
On a side, I was sitting in the children's room at mass the other day with xav and a Filipino lady leaned over asked if "my chubby baby was actually breast fed". I said yes. She asked again, "Entirely?". Well it just so happens, yes. I think she was sure I was stuffing food down his throat. How else could he be so big? She giggled with absolute amusement. I wasn't sure what was so remarkable when a friend said that Filipinos just adore chubby babies (don't we all). I wonder if this is true? It probably is. In any case, I am glad their culture is so vocal about it!

The secret is out. Xavier is certainly a little Ian.
